7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Land Clearing Contractor
Land Stream Team · September 25, 2026
The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest job. These seven questions separate professional operators from expensive mistakes.
Land clearing is heavy equipment work on your most valuable asset. A bad hire can mean damaged fences, torn-up driveways, or a half-finished job. Ask these seven questions before you sign anything.
1. Can you send me a certificate of insurance?
General liability is the minimum. If a machine hits your neighbor's fence or a worker gets hurt on your property, you do not want to find out the policy lapsed. Any legitimate contractor emails a certificate within a day.
2. What equipment will you actually bring?
The right machine for 2 acres of cedar is the wrong machine for 20 acres of hardwood. Ask what they plan to run and why it fits your terrain and vegetation.
3. How are you handling the debris?
Mulch in place, push and burn, or haul off? Each has a very different price and a very different finished look. Get it in writing.
4. Is the quote itemized?
Clearing, debris, access work, and any road or gate repair should be separate lines. A single lump sum makes it impossible to compare bids.
5. Have you checked the burn ban and permit situation?
If the plan involves burning, the contractor should know your county's current burn ban status. If they have not checked, that tells you something.
6. What does the finished job look like?
Define done. Stumps ground or left? Ruts repaired? Fence lines cleared to the wire? The more specific the answer, the fewer surprises.
7. Can I see photos of similar jobs?
Before and after photos of comparable properties tell you more than any sales pitch.
